From all of us at Internet Local Listings, we wish you a happy Valentine’s Day weekend! Just for fun, we’re going to take a break from sharing tips about marketing and small business SEO, and share a few facts about the holiday!
1. The Origins
The history of Valentine’s Day isn’t 100% clear, but most suspect that the holiday’s roots come from the Roman festival of Lupercalia, which was actually a fertility celebration occurring every February 15th. Naturally, that means it was pagan in origin, but around 496, Pope Gelasius I decided to change the festival to a Christian feast. He then declared February 14 to be St. Valentine’s Day, and the rest, as they say, is history.
2. Paper Valentines
In early 19th Century England, paper valentines cards became so popular they were assembled in factories. The handiwork was impressive, as you can see in this picture:
3. The Rise of The Valentine’s Cards
Cards gained momentum throughout the 19th century. People across England as well as the US enjoyed sending and receiving Valentine’s-themed cards and postcards. Thankfully, though, they’ve come a long way since then:
4. Who Celebrates Valentine’s Day?
Although the traditions of modern Valentine’s Day started in England, people all across the world celebrate the holiday today. Some of these countries include:
- South Korea
and many more!
5. It’s a Holiday with Rich Traditions–Not Just “Commercial” Value.
It’s true! Valentine’s Day is actually well-documented and has a rich history across religions. For more information on the history of Valentine’s Day, check out these videos on History.com.
